Follow Yourself

“Be yourself; everyone else is taken.”

Oscar Wilde

Everyone who’s lived a life worth following—Nelson Mandela, Amelia Earhart, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Anthony Bourdain, you name ’em—has one thing in common:

They got there by making their own paths rather than following someone else’s.

So do we follow their lead?

We follow them

We read their biographies, listen to their podcasts, and follow their Instagram accounts and we copy them… which is exactly what they didn’t do.

Quit Worrying

When we start following our own route, we’ll worry about missing out on what everyone else is doing. Even worse, we’ll worry about being mocked for it.

But do you think the people who’ve lived lives worth following missed out?

No. What they experienced blew whatever they missed out of the water.

And do they care about the haters?

Not when they gained so many more admirers.

Like them, we need the quit worrying about others and focus on our own paths.

Crack Your Code

Our lives are giant combination locks.

Everyone who’s lived lives worth following tirelessly tinkered with different combos on theirs until, “click,” something opened up. With it, they unlocked part of their potential.

Some get lucky and crack their codes early. Others never find it.

All we can do is enjoy the challenge as we experiment with different combos until something clicks for us too.

Live a Memorable Story

Failing sucks.

It sucks even harder when we’re being “smartasses” who’re trying to do something different rather than follow everyone else. Boring follower-types will chirp, “Of course that didn’t work. They’re no better than us.”

The bad news is we can’t avoid it. We’re guaranteed to fail when we make our own way.

The good news is the miserable feeling of failure doesn’t last forever. Sooner than we think, we laugh at our past failures and are thankful for them.

Our failures are part of our stories. And our stories would be boring as hell without them.

Where Will You Be Five Years from Now?

Five years from now, do you want to be sitting on the same chair you’re sitting on right now, just a bit fatter and more jaded about life, wondering what happened while you refresh your Instagram feed?

If not, try something different.

Stop following others and worrying so much and start following your own entertaining story until you crack your code.

If you do, five years from now who knows where you’ll be? It definitely won’t be where you are now.
